Nominal Clauses

Nominal clauses are dependent clauses that play the role of a noun in a sentence. They are made up of a subject and a verb, but cannot stand alone in a sentence. Using nominal clauses in letters and essays plays a crucial role in developing your writing skills. A nominal clause maintains the logical flow of ideas in a paragraph and presents the main idea and supporting details in a text. To guide you more, nominal clauses begin with the following words:

        ·         What
        ·         How
        ·         That
        ·         Who
        ·         When
        ·         Where
        ·         Whomever
        ·         Whom
        ·         Why
        ·         Whichever
        ·         Whether
        ·         Whatever
        ·         Whoever
        ·         Which

To boost your IELTS training even more, below are the five functions of nominal clauses in a sentence:

      1.    A subject of the sentence

When a sentence begins with a nominal clause, it acts as a subject of the sentence.
What Meg said made her friends mad.

      2.    An object of the sentence

A nominal clause functions as an object of a sentence when it is the receiver of the subject’s action.

My mom didn’t know why the stove wasn’t working.

      3.    The complement of the subject

When a nominal clause comes after a linking verb, it acts as a subjective complement.
His crowning achievement at the IELTS UKVI review center was when he got a high band score in the IELTS General Training Writing Test.

      4.    The complement of the object

Nominal clauses function as the objective complement when they follow the direct object in a sentence.

My sister bought a book which she had always desired to have.

      5.    The object of a preposition

A nominal clause becomes an object of a preposition when it follows a preposition in a sentence.

The players decided on who should lead the baseball team.
Furthermore, nominal clauses can also function as an adjective complement, modifying an adjective in a sentence.

His mother was glad when Peter returned home.
