This joint-research program aims to ensure that the test remains contemporary, significant, and useful for institutions that use IELTS Academic, IELTS General Training or IELTS UKVI test results. It also guarantees that IELTS contributes to the growing understanding of the nature of language proficiency and its place within linguistic and language studies.

Each year, researchers and institutions with relevant experience are invited to present their IELTS-related research projects. Financial support for individual projects selected is limited to £45,000/AU$70,000.
