When you come across
capitalization during your IELTS general training, have you
thought of it as easy? If yes, then you probably already know to capitalize the
first word of a sentence and proper nouns. You may be thinking this is not even
worth reading. However, you may be committing unconscious mistakes.
Also, there are instances when
you don’t capitalize after using a colon or in quotations. There are certain
conditions when capitalizing some words. Read on to know how to capitalize
words appropriately.
Capitalize the first word
of a sentence
It is essential always to
capitalize the first word of a sentence. This tip may be the most
straightforward rule in capitalization because there are no exceptions and
other complications.
The dog is
hungry.
Capitalize proper nouns
and names
By definition, proper nouns are
capitalized; this is what differentiates them from common nouns. As for the
names of cities, countries, and religions, you should also capitalize these
words.

Also, words like dad and grandma
need to be capitalized when used as a form of address only. Do not use upper
case for these words when used for something else.
I will tell you
to Mom.
Your mom is not
going like this.
Capitalize after using a
colon
Usually, you don’t need to
capitalize after a colon. However, when the colon is following a proper noun or
a complete sentence, it must start with the uppercase.
I have one real
dream: basketball coaching.
There is
only one country I want to visit: South Korea.
Capitalize the first word
of a quote
If the complete sentence is a
quotation, capitalize the first word. However, don’t use upper case for the
first word of an incomplete quote.
Maria
answered, “I will be going to my class at JRooz IELTS General
Training.”
Bea said
she was “way too busy” to join us for lunch.
Capitalize days, moths,
and holidays
Use upper case for proper nouns
such as the names of days, months, and holidays. However, do not capitalize the
name of the seasons must not.
Jen’s
birthday is in December.
Having a
winter birthday is fantastic.
Capitalize periods and
events
You must also capitalize
historical events, eras, and periods are proper names. However, centuries and
the numbers before them must not start with capital letters.
In the
Middle Ages, the spreading of the plague is partly due to poor hygiene.
In the seventeenth century,
England became an empire.
Whatever you write, there will be
instances when you will have to decide whether or not to capitalize a word. It
only takes practice to get better.
